CREATING “ROSA MOSAICO” - a COMMISSIONED PAINTING

7/20/2022

Comments

April 2020 was the last time I picked up a paintbrush. The pandemic created so much anxiety that painting again seemed a distant dream.
In late 2021, a friend commissioned a painting. He showed me a photo from the Dior Garden in France. With the photo as a base, I deconstructed the image using colors he requested - Soft greys, lavenders, blues, greens and a light toned pinks.
To create the soft tones I used an old world technique called Fresco, I fused the pigment powders directly into the wet gesso, similar to primer or plaster. This technique dates back to antiquity and was often used in the Italian Renaissance.
With the background dry, I created a soft black / pewter color and brassy gold to highlight the details. I made these colors with acrylic mediums, pigment and iridescent powders. The result is named Rosa Mosaico.
Prints of the painting are available at - https://www.benmusacollection.com/store/c15/Prints

My MEDITERRANEAN Paintings…

"This series is based on my travels to Italy and the Mediterranean area. The textured papers remind me of the richness and colors used in the villas and homes along the coastlines. Marble (metamorphic rock), stucco and granite are immensely popular materials used throughout the Mediterranean, I added the drip technique to represent water's power to enrich and etch out the lives and homes of so many different cultures and peoples along the Mediterranean coastlines." - benMUSA

So … It’s been as one would say crazy this past year - I guess that would be an understatement. We all have dealt with loss. And with some the ultimate loss. Many will still feel that throughout this year. I hope the dispersion of the vaccines with a new administration will continue to quicken in pace.
I am so ready to leave 2020 behind. I am sure we all agree on that part.
This year I am focusing on a fresh start. I have so many exciting projects and products I will be announcing in the up coming months, so I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself for those who might not be familiar with who I am and what I do.
Since high school, my life has centered around a creative outlet; writing, painting and design. Being from a Muslim / 1st generation Libyan background was difficult to balance in a West Houston Texas high school . Luckily, my imagination helped foster my voracious appetite for fantasy and science fiction literature. Essentially it kept me grounded. It was my mother who pushed me into Art. I found it to be an extension of what I was reading and quickly became my passion. And although I stopped for many years after high school, I never truly let it go even as progressed into a graphic design career. I still held on to the idea of painting and writing again.
This continued and finally evolved to The benMUSA Collection. It began with a friend who commissioned my first painting. I began exploring my Mediterranean and North African heritage. The collection is essentially an extension of my passion in writing, art and design. From the beginning I believed it would help explore my interests. To further enlighten me on my personal struggles, to discuss and explore the social and racial injustices that I often observe, and hopefully to find that common ground that we all relate as a humans.
I continue to expand my collection. For I see the collection as a metaphor to the universe itself. Every growing and evolving. This year will be the biggest endeavor. And I am excited to share this with you throughout the months ahead. Thank you for your time. Peace and Blessings.

Hey everyone, Thank you and welcome to The benMUSA Collection. Today is a special day for me - 4 years ago I introduced a video called "The Artist’s Thin Line." It dealt with my philosophy as a painter. A statement of how I see and perceive the world. In so many ways this video really delves even further in what is going on with the world today. So, I am reintroducing this video. A start to many videos I will be producing throughout 2021. https://youtube.com/channel/UCAZ4_Q3QcDtdMrbDFXnl3fg

It will be a variety of subjects - art, reviews, social issues, scientific and tech breakthroughs (I am a geek) and some of my personal struggles. Let me know what you think in the comments below and don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel. Peace and Blessings…
